It was the summer before my 8th grade year of junior high. I was at youth camp. It was my first trip away from home. I was even more awkward than I am now. But somehow, despite my awkwardness and a horrible stomach virus that made its way through the group, I made some friends.
And one day during free time those friends invited me to walk with them down the beach to a huge pier. “It’s not THAT far,” they said. “We’ll be back in time for lunch,” they said. “Your feet won’t burn completely off,” they said.
